I was talking hockey with an old friend today and then when I logged on, I saw that Art has a new avatar (Detroit Red Wings) and then my blood started to boil. Can't stand the Wings, Art. Sorry pal. Anyway, the Kings suck and have sucked since Gretzky left the team, so I haven't been to enthused with the team. I liked Dallas until Darien Hatcher went to the Wings. Damn!!!
Anyway, my prediction is a Lightning vs. Avalanche finals with the 'Ning winning it all. Call me crazy, but I just got that feeling. I'm sure I'll get a lot of you frost bitten Canadians to chime in on this. |

| Wings vs. Lightning in the finals. Look for the Red Wings to win their 4th Stanley Cup in 7 years. |

| I'm thinking you might be right on your prediction. But if i had a second choice it would be Philly vs. San Jose. Philly winning. |

In this thread I predicted that NJ & calgary might make it to the finals due to strong goaltending. Well, Jersey is out but the Flames burned the Canucks in OT in game 7 of their series & they will move on to face Detroit.
I'm sticking with Calagary to make it to the finals although it makes me unseasy to cheer for them since they are bitter rival of my home team (the Oilers). *****IF they steal one of the first two games in Detroit they will be on their way, perhaps against the Flyers. |

Wings (argh) vs. Leafs
Two old-er teams assembled to go deep into the playoffs. Whether either of them do or not, who knows.
For the 'Original 6' fans, a 2004 playoff season with:
a) Boston playing Montreal
b) Montreal playing Toronto
c) Toronto playing Detroit
would be amazing. |

But that was the hardest test. Everybody knows that if the Wings survive the first round they'll go all the way. Stevie Y is on a mission this year because it'll probably be his last, and the Captain wants one more Cup. |

With my beloved Kings suffering through another injury plagued season (and a spectacular late season collapse), I'm throwing my allegiance to the TB Lightning. I like the Bolts in 6 over the SJ Sharks. It'll be the Bulin Wall vs. Nabakov. It'll be Andreychuk vs. Damphousse. It'll be Korolyuk vs. St. Louis.
I think Dave Lewis will mismanage their goalie situation and that Ron Wilson has the experienced having taken the Caps there a few years ago. |

Can't aruge with too much ethusiasm here. The Sharks are simply being more aggressive in all aspects. Leaving Marleau alone in the crease was inexcusiable. The Wings are too old and I'm tired of getting #&*(*(# from the few Wings fans at work.
I say the winner of Avs/SJ vs. Lightning. |

I was hoping the AVS won, they would be easier to beat than the Sharks......Sharks are good this year.. |

I wanna see the Avs take it all. I liked what Kariya did, walking away from a fatter contract and take a big salary cut to be with a contender. Would be nice to see him win a cup. Colorado would be a good place to do it too. Look what Borque got when he went to that place.
My buddies and I are taking in any game we can, even though the Oilers didn't evem make it to the playoffs this year. Have a feeling that we won't be seeing any hockey for sometime after this year. Hope it's not the case, but gotta be realistic... |

What Kariya did was great.
I was watching one of the earlier Leaf games, when they beat Ottawa (hate that team), and was on such a high, I watched the Calgary-Vancouver game. WOW what great hockey these 2 teams played, fast and furious. Love Iginla.
I was wondering who you and Borg would be cheering for, Flames or Oilers, now I know.
The Leafs-Flyers is going to be tough and ugly. But the Leafs will triumph this year. Would be nice to go against the Wings and send them home crying.:2:

| Yeah, last year during the Ducks/Devils finals, the Cup came to DirecTV (where my wife works) for about an hour and a half. Stevie Y is a scratch indefinitely, after having gone through a 4 hour surgery to repair the damage that was inflicted when the puck hit him in his eye. Scratched cornea and multiple fractures to his orbital socket. Youch!! It was painful seeing him go down in the slow-mo replay. Had to feel for the guy.

Holy Cow, what a fun game that was to watch! There were so many nail biters in that game. Have to feel for Cujo though. He always seems to end up on the short end of the stick. It's amazing how many good goalies have come through the Oilers organization. Sather sure knew how to pick them.
What's even funnier is that Gelina first came through the Oilers too, hand picked by Sather, as part of the third line ("kid line") we use to have, which was more productive than some of the veteran first lines in the league at the time.
Am I happy that the Flames advanced? NOOOOOO!!! It was just a fun series to watch, that's all. When the Flames meet, hopefully the Avs, I hope the Avs will crush them, along with the Flames and the arrogant and oblivious Flames fans as well :D :D :D |

I REALLY wanted the Wings to win it this year, especially for CuJo's sake. He went through hell and back, with the Hasek fiasco, and never complained. Played great during the playoffs - especially last night.
The word on Yzerman is that he will make a complete recovery, but with the threat of a strike/lockout next season one has to wonder if his career is over.
Oh well, ..... Go Pistons!! |

I'm in the camp that says a Leafs/Flames Final would be great for Toronto and Calgary.
Regardless of who's in the Finals, the best things about NHL Playoffs are:
1) End to end action
2) 30-45 second shifts where the players go all out and then rest for a couple of minutes.
3) Overtime that means something (compared to the regular season)
4) Referees that look the other way and keep the action going
5) 'Series upsets' - At this point all scenarios are still possible. None of the remaining teams (including Colorado and Toronto) are out of it. |

Yeah, I totally agree with this. The NHL playoffs are like no other pro sports playoffs. It is such a grinding process, yet it never feels like it's drawn out at all. By far, it's the most physically demanding post season games. And the fans can really get emotionally spent too. |

My 2cents about the notion that since the Flames are in the NHL finals, all of Canada should cheer for them.
I never bought into it. As I had voiced my opinion in a hockey forum already, what people are forgetting is that this is the NHL. Meaning, no one team really represents a whole country, be it Canada, USA, Sweden, Czechoslavakia, USSR or whatever.
The operation of NHL, by definition and also by RECENT history never had one team represented a country. This is purely a business and marketing entity.
Does anyone really think that the Red Wings, the Avalanche, the Devils, and so on, when the majority the respective teams' players consist of Canadian players, consider them as Canadian teams? Puuuuuleeeeeeaze!!!
Flames are just another NHL team to me. Whether they win or not is absolutely and completely immaterial to me. However, I know I'll be in for a good series since the Flames and the 'Nings have an open ice attack style that's really fun and entertaining to watch.
[I'll throw in my PS right here, lest someone thinks that this is directed to those in this forum. It isn't. But here in the local papers and even around the "watercooler" at work, many feel that Calgary deserves our city's support and also the nation's support.]
And I just don't understand the argument, nor have I bought into the belief about how all of Canada should cheer for the Flames just because they happen to be a Canadian "FRANCHISE". Me and my buddies have gotten into heated arguements about this already.
Now, come this September, when TEAM CANADA plays against other nations' teams in the WORLD CUP OF HOCKEY, AS PITIFUL AND PATHETIC the other teams maybe :D :D :D, I'll be cheering for TEAM CANADA because each and every player truly represents CANADA to the bone, right down to the coaches, the assistant coaches and the managers. And when the next Winter Olympics take place, I'll be cheering and screaming for TEAM CANADA all over again, just like I did during the last one.
But come on, the Calgary Flames reaching the finals does not warrant our great country to pull together to stand behind them. In the end, the owners and the players don't give a rat's ass whether they're a "Canadian" team in the NHL or not. Case in point, if that were not the case, we wouldn't be facing this BS CBA fiasco.
The owners would share their revenues and the players would agree to salary caps so that the smaller market teams, namely in Canada, can survive and carry on the tradition of the NHL.
May be the sentiments would be different if they were not coming from such fantical Oilers follower, such as I, but just putting things in logical and rational perspective, I've always viewed the NHL teams and the components that went with the entities, such as the owners of the team and etc., to have never represented any national interest.
NHL teams, especially some in the big markets in the US, never cared about any national representation. In fact, many of them, such as the Flyers, tried to buy the holy grail, Lord Stanley Cup, year after year, buying talent from all over the world. Calgary has Jerome Iginla who has roots close to here and I love him for it.
But again, come on people, if your team's out, then that's it. Don't try to ride the bandwagon, or go with the fair weather. That goes for both the US AND the Canadian teams. I can just see some Flyers fans rooting for the "Nings just because they're a US franchise.
Like I said, just my 2cents.
Having said that, as I stated above, I still think it'll be very fun and entertaining to watch these two teams go at it. |

| Nice post RipRock, argued very well. I will tell you if Ottawa was in the final I would be cheering Tampa Bay on. Once the Leafs are out, my heart is not in the game. But, the finals I always watch whether there is a Canadian team or not. It is always great hockey. |

Not a Flames fan, never have & never will. But I must give credit where credit is due, the Flames deserve to be in the Finals for their hard work, complete team effort & stellar performaces from a couple of players. They also have a coaching staff & a system that seem to get the most out of the players. No one in their right mind would have said that the Flames would be in the Finals at the start of the season, let alone at the start of the playoffs when they were matched up with the Canucks. But they went on to dispatch the Canucks, Wings & the Sharks.....& now have a great chance of beating T-Bay for the Cup.
No, I'm not a Flames fan, never have & never will. But someone asked me "Who'll be in the Finals?", I said the Flames & Flyers. Dont ask me how I chose the teams but it was a very specific study of all the teams that made the playoffs;) :D .
Had the Flyers managed to beat T-Bay Nings, my prediciton would change to a dominating Cup win by the Flyers against the Flames.
Oh, one more thing.......not a Flames fan, never have & never will.:D |

...this is the NHL. Meaning, no one team really represents a whole country, be it Canada, USA, Sweden, Czechoslavakia, USSR or whatever.
The operation of NHL, by definition and also by RECENT history never had one team represented a country. This is purely a business and marketing entity.
Yes, if we identified a team by the nationality of it's players, then nearly all NHL teams are Canadian teams. This season, 52.1 percent of the players on opening-night rosters were Canadians. according to NHL.com's magazine.
Things to think about :
1) The original purpose of pro-sports teams was to provide entertainment to a local group of people, who come to the games, and a job for those who could play the game.
2) Fans of a team get some of their personal identity from that local team, regardless of who plays on that team. Even if several of those players were only picked up for a 'playoff run'.
So, years ago, the fans of an NHL team likely followed that team because of:
a) proximity to that NHL city, and
b) 4-6 players that they really liked on that team, who likely would remain on that team for a long
Today, fans of an NHL team likely follow that team because of:
a) proximity to that NHL city (either today or previously),
b) the savviness of a GM to bring in 4-6 players that can carry the team "deep into the playoffs".
This fact helps me to appreciate the 'game' of hockey more today than the 'business' of hockey.
I s'pose that I can ponder these things today and cheer for the Flames, because the 'Leafs are out of the playoffs. |

Thanks guys for receiving my rant so well. You guys are a great bunch.
I was just getting sick of seeing some of my co-workers and even my buddies jumping on the bandwagon to cheer for the Flames, saying how you gotta cheer for the "Canadian" team in the Cup finals.
What I'm sensing with them is that, they just don't wanna face the fact that our (Oilers') season's been long over and are looking for any reason to prolong it. And thus the Flames, because of their close proximity to our city, is a convinient reason to cheer and celebrate.
Holy, and celebrate they did!! Check out this link my buddy just emailed me. I don't know if we'd ever see celebrations like this in our city even if our Oilers WON the Cup!
But man, I must say, those cowtown girls sure know how to party it up. This is almost reason enough, I say almost :D, for the Flames to win the whole thing. If it looks as though the Flames might win the Cup at home, I'm heading down there with my camera :D :D :D
In the meantime, I'm just waiting for the World Cup come this fall. |

The ladies are lovely but not enuff to turn me onto a Flames fan.;)
First game was won handily by the Flames, they seem to get stronger each series they play..........I sense a sweep Flames victory. |

Oooooh, that's a bold prediction :D Sure was a nice goal by Iginla though. That guy's like a bulldog on the ice. Apparently, a very nice person off the ice though.
I really enjoyed watching the game. Never really a dull moment. |

| Missed the game. I was at work and wouldn't you know it....the Lakers/T-Wolves game was on. I think I'd rather watch paint dry, than watch the NBA. Saw the highlights, looks like the Flames really handed it to the 'Ning. Thursday's just around the corner. If anyone can make it, we'll be watching the game at my house. If any of you residing in the Great White North would like to come to beautiful SoCal, c'mon down. I'll have plenty of beer and munchies. :2: |

| Complete reversal of Tuesday's game. Tampa dominated and that Richards kid played a fantastic game. I'm glad Calgary scored at least one goal. |

Wow, what a reversal. I missed the game last night, was at a late meeting, that ran very late (no hockey fans there). It should be interesting on Sat. night.
By the way, I couldn't believe it there were cars in Toronto with the Flames flag clipped on the window. Go figure. |

I missed the game too, I took the family to live performance of Sound of Music.
Just as well, looked like T-BAY really took it to the Flames.....there goes my prediction of a sweep.:28: |

Oh, nice! We're going on the very last day of the run. I was lucky too. The original dates were sold out, but Citadel had extended the show dates, so I was able to score some tickets for the last day. I tell ya, that really saved my neck :D

hehehe...no biggie. Even the so called hockey experts and veteran commentators and observers have been baffled and completely off the mark with this year's playoff results :D
And you gotta wonder if the Flames will even win the next two games, seeing as how they've performed so poorly at home. They did win when it mattered with the Sharks, but it'll be interesting to see how it turns out.
Me, the only reason I'd rather see the Flames win at this point is to keep on having those Flames girls flashing :2: |

IGINLA grew up/played in St Albert & lives here in the summer. Needless to say most of the residents are cheering for IGINLA & the Flames & most have outfitted their cars with the flaming C flag. Hopefully these people come to their senses next season & cheer on the OILER's.........if there is a next season?

Yep, it was great.....the production, the sets & the performances were top notch. It sure earned me a kitchen pass for the next "boys night out"!:D |

Getting this thread back on course.
Tonight is game 4 & it should be a good one, most of the so called experts say that going for the 3rd win is the toughest so we'll see how the Flames have learned from past mistakes & come up with their 3rd win, if at all. T-Bay will not go away quietly, nor allow the Flames to have a strangle hold on the series so I think this game will be the fiercest battle between the 2 teams.
I think that the Flames will win tonight, go into T-Bay for game 5 & lose then come back to Calgary for the Cup clinching game. |

Crud, I get back to the game after having changed my tire and posting here about it, only to find that some moron on the Flames got a major, pretty much handing the game over to TB.
No fresh boobies...errrr...I mean fan pics tonight at www.flamescentral.com :3: plus my tire's flat :3: :3: :3: |

| Sunday Rider |
It was a great game. The first one I watched from the begining to end. The Flames got some stupid penalties, and TB capitalized big time. There were so many chances for the Flames, but...
What an exciting series.
I will search for your flat tire strory. Good luck Riprock. |

| I was outta town for Saturday's game. Nice win by the Flames, though. Nieminen put quite a hit on Lecavalier and deserved that major. That dude really had his bell rung!! Well, it's 2-2 and now I'm wondering if Tampa is going to get the job done. |

From NHL.com:

Flames' Nieminen suspended for one game
TAMPA - The National Hockey League announced today that Calgary Flames left wing Ville Nieminen has been suspended for one game for a hitting-from-behind incident involving Tampa Bay Lightning center Vincent Lecavalier in Game #4 of the Stanley Cup Final, May 31.
The incident occurred at 15:47 of the third period. Nieminen was assessed a major penalty for boarding and a game misconduct.
"Nieminen used his forearm to deliver a forceful hit from behind to the head of his opponent," said NHL Executive Vice President and Director of Hockey Operations Colin Campbell. "This hit was more severe than any of the other plays that were brought to our attention during the Final. This was a hit that clearly crossed the line and was directed at the head. Even if Lecavalier is able to play in Game #5, this type of hit must be subject to supplemental discipline."
Nieminen had been suspended previously in this year's Stanley Cup playoff (Game #5 of Western Conference Semifinal series against Detroit) and is considered a repeat offender.
Nieminen will miss Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Final, June 3 at Tampa Bay. He will be eligible to return for Game 6, June 5 at Calgary. |

| Damn!! Didn't think we'd see a game seven. Any predictions from our prognosticators out there? |
|
|
| Sunday Rider |
What a game 6. It was such a good game, but the over time(s)? One slip up, and they are on to game 7.
I say Calgary will win by the score of 3-1.
Kind of tough to have to see one of these 2 teams not win the cup. They both came up big when needed. Sure have more respect for Tampa Bay now.
Great to see hockey played at both ends and so fast.
Monday may be the last game for a long, long time. |
