| I spoke to my Service advisor and he said that he would do the tsb, but that the shims severly reduce the life of the brake pads. I trust these guys. He also told me all Ody's and Accords do the clunk as well. If the clunk does not bother you too much, I would leave it alone. Worry more about the tranny recall! I almost never hear the clunk by the way... |

Hmmm... just bought an Odyssey a few days ago -- no clunk yet, but let's see how long it takes for it to develop one!!! (My Pilot has the clunking of the brakes...) |

My '98 Accord clunked from day one. I'd never heard such a noise, but a quick trip to the dealer convinced me it was "normal." With the Pilot, the clunk wasn't there at first, resulting in a trip to the dealer asking why it wasn't doing it. Not to worry, though. It started within two months. |

what I want to hear is thunk when I close the door, but the clunk is there for a reason, the brake pads are loose and the shims+hardware are keeping it from clunking or rattling(eventually) when driving through rough roads.
It does not reduce the life of the brake pads(where oh where did he get this idea?). As for the tranny recall, oh well, I'm close to 26,000 miles as of this writing:3: |

Went in for oil change and brake shim TSB today. Here is the conversation that followed:
Rep: So you want an oil change and you say your brakes are shimmying?
Me: No...I want to have the TSB for the brake shims done on my Pilot.
Rep: What is that?
Me: A Technical Service Bulletin issued by Honda to address a fix for a brake clunking noise.
Rep: Oh. Is there a problem?
Me: Yeeessss.......my brakes are making a loud clunking noise.
Rep: Can you describe it?
Me: It is a LOUD, CLUNKING NOISE...the first time I apply the brakes in "Drive" or "Reverse".
Rep: Well, we'll have to have the Tech check it out. You know, many people complain about the clunk but it is perfectly normal...
Me: So you've heard of this before?
Rep: Sure.
Me: What do you mean when you say it's "Perfectly normal"?
Rep: All the cars do it.
Me: Hmmm....my Accord doesn't do it...
Rep: I mean all the Pilots do it.
Me: Well, if it was normal, why would Honda put out a bulletin telling you how to solve this problem?
Rep: I don't know.
Me: Would you like to have a copy of the TSB for your files?
Rep: Oh. no, no, I don't need that. We'll check it out.
(90 minutes later)
Rep: Great news! The tech was able to duplicate the clunking noise. I talked to our Service Manager and he agreed to do the TSB work to fix it. Unfortunately, we haven't done one in over a year, and we don't have any parts in stock. So we ordered them for you.
Me: OK....The TSB just came out a month or 2 ago - how would you have done the TSB fix a year ago?
Rep: Oh. We knew about it before the TSB.
Me: Right.
Rep: So we'll call you next week when the parts come in.
Me: I can't wait... |

Pairallel, man, that's a total BS. A dealer making you feel as though they're doing you a damn favor by performing a TSB for which you're well under the warranty for is total BS.
I'd say, find yourself another dealer to service your Pilot at. I wouldn't trust a dealer like that to perform the TSB procedures properly in the first place. |
