Recently I've been on several Geo Cache Expeditions in the Cascades of Washington state and I'm HOOKED. Now in in the market for a handheld GPS and am in need of some input.
Any recommendations - comments - opinions on handheld GPS or Geo Caching would be greatly appreciated.
The trips also served as a light off-road test. Pilots may not be trail rated but nothing stopped me and the ride and comfort was far better than the Cherokees or the Liberty I have owned.
Thanks in advanced for your thoughts |

I've had an eTrex Vista for years and it has worked great. It's water-proof, and has been knocked around a lot with no ill effects.
I recommend Expertgps as companion software.
Expertgps.com
Expertgps lets you manage waypoints and is setup to automatically download aerial photos and topographic maps off the web. You can use it to see where you've been, or to plan routes.
Having mapped "the old fashioned way" in my youth, I still can't believe how far technology has progressed.:)

WOW! What fast posts!!!
Sungchang - Yes I do have a PDA. Unfortunatley, my Visor Deluxe that in it's day had a GPS module available has passed to a better world. My current PDA is a Treo (phone/PDA) that does not have module slots.
Riseboi - Thanks for the link to Geocaching.com. I have looked it over and found some good info. While I was there I "signed up". Although I snooped aroung only a short time, I didn't see the interaction of members that this site has.
Terrier - You're suggestion of the eTrex Vista is on my list and I'm checking out Expertgps software.
Here are my findings
Garmin seems to be the 1 at least for handhelds ( my nav system on my boat is Garmin so I'm familiar with the product line).
The short list of the GPS units I'm looking at are: (all Garmin)
eTrex Vista
eTrex Legend
SportTrac Topo
Meridian Platinum
The search continues!!!!!!!
Thanks for your thoughts.... keep them coming |
