I'm curious what fellow Piloteers/golfers have for golf clubs, what do you like/dislike about them?
If you had a thousand dollars burning a hole in your wallet, which golf equipment would you upgrade?
I currently have a complete set of ADAMS GT Tight Lies from 2002. Driver, 3 & 5 woods have graphite shafts while the irons (3 to SW) have steel shafts, for a putter I use Odyssey DFX. I'm really quite happy with my sticks but if I had a thousand dollars to blow on new clubs I'd splurge on a 3 & 5 woods by Ping or Cleveland, even though I know that my ability will never reach the potential that my current clubs offer me now.:D |
|
|
| GoCards |
My sticks are more of a hodge podge:
Mizuno Blue Rage driver
Callaway Steelhead 3 wood
Callaway Steelhead Plus 5 wood
Maxfli Revolution irons
Cleveland BeCu Gap and Sand Wedges
Oddessy White Hot Putter
I like my driver a lot. The ball just seems to shoot off the club face. The putter is inconsistent but I think that is the user more than the club. The irons are great if you are swinging well but if you are not quite on, then they let you know. If I had a grand to put into clubs, I would probably get the Cleveland Launcher fairway woods and a new set of irons (Ping I3, Mizuno MP30, or Titliest 762s).

Good topic!
My irons (3-GapW) are Henry-Griffitts "Greenbacks"...custom fit w/stiff steel shafts, low kickpoint, 1' upright lie. Love 'em. About 7 yrs old and courtesy of a bonus @ work back then. They were about a grand.
Driver is a Cobra 350SS titanium, graphite stiff. Best club in the bag for me (275ish with an occassional 290+), always in play. About 2 yrs old and I hit *everything* on the range before buying this one.
3w is an old Yonex300 graphite head, graphite stiff. Decent but a good 15 yrs old so technologically obsolete. Still works. Had the matching 7w at one time, but the head flew off and landed on someones roof (never found). 230 neighborhood with an occassional flyer to 250+. Consistently straight but not an easy one to hit off the deck.
Just got an Adams rescue club (18 deg IIRC; steel stiff) that I hit 215-230 depending. Was supposed to replace the 7w or 3iron or both. Having a helluva time getting a groove with this one; hit perfect before I bought it (tried the Nike and TM rescues @ the same time).
Sand wedge is a Ping (love it) and lob wedge is a Titleist Vokey (hated it at first but after a lesson it finally works properly). Putter's an Oddy Rossie Blade. Nice but I screwed around w/the new Nike putter @ the store the other day and it was calling my name.
No, I don't have ALL the clubs in the bag at the same time -- I play by the rules...including winter rules year-round. :D
Balls right now are the Maxfli M3 tours. Love 'em. Clearance @ $20/dozen. Used to play Titleist Tour Balata, then Titleist Professionals, then Maxfli Revolution (original), the Max A10, now the M3. www.golfballs.com has good deals, especially on logo overruns, but their inventory has been very weak for the past couple of months.
My latest addition(s) to the collection (aside from the Adams rescue) are a new Ogio Bag which I really like. It's a cart bag and hangs off the back @ a 45 degree angle. Neat design. The other is a Bushnell Rangefinder (YaragePro TourXL) which replaced an older one that croaked.
I am committed to buying my way to a better game. ;) Currently an 8.5 hcp...had a hot month in April: 77, 79, 79, 79, 80 that brought it down from 10.x. Hacked my way to a 93 and 89 most recently :(
With $1k to burn:
new Nike Putter ($200ish)
new 3 wood, probably the Cobra to match my driver ($200 ish)
more ammo ($20/dozen)
I guess I'd add the rescue club (2i/3i replacement type) and the new bag to the list since they're both just a few weeks old ($100 and $200 respectively, though they were on sale @ $69 and $160).
Wow - that grand went fast! |

It is the best site I have found so far to keep track of your scores and pertinent information about your rounds. I track everything from my game and this is a good site to be able to store it. You can compare rounds or compare groupings of rounds. Just this year, they got an affiliation so that they can provide official USGA handicaps also.

Wow, cool thread!
Driver: Mizuno T-Zoid Titanium Forged Driver. 9*, UST ProForce 65 Gold stiff. Predecessor to the Blue Rage model. I've tried out some of the newer models with those gargantuan heads, but just don't like them.
3W: Adams Tight Lies ST. 13*, True Temper Dynamic Gold S300.
2i - PW: KZG Forged Blades. TT Dynamic Gold S400. (Used to play with Mizuno MP-4's, but was showing its age. So, I put them up on eBay and luckily was sold enough for a set of KZG blades. I love these blades. Miura foundry (http://www.miuragolf.com/shop_blade.asp) makes these blades for KZG. I just wish they'd come out with a lefthanded model for their ZO (Zero Offset) line.
SW: Mizuno T-Zoid Comp EZ. Stock shaft/grip, which ended up being TT Dynamic Gold S300/Tour Velvet anyway :D
Putter: Wilson Tour Special I Forged. Ping putter grip. I bought this little gem from a roadside mini-golf place about 5 years ago for $5! It's a blade style putter you don't see around anymore.
The swingweight on all my clubs is D5, right from the driver through SW, save for my putter, which is D6. Except for the putter, they all have Golf Pride Tour Velvet on them.
I'm actually fairly happy with my set. None of the newer drivers and irons impress me much. It's the archer, not the arrow, anyway ;) But if i had a grand to spend on golf, I'd probably spend it on some quality instruction at one of those resort type of schools. |

There is your answer right there! Unless your gear is woefully out of date, that's a great one! :4:
Come to think of it, I used to get brochures for all of 'em on a regular basis...haven't seen one in the past few years. Still subscribe to Golf Something and Golf Somethingelse magazines but maybe they're not sharing the mailing list anymore. |

Ping 1, 3, 5 woods
Ping Eye 3-9 irons
Ping sand & wedge
Ping putter
Maxfli or Titleist balls
For 1K budget:
I'll start with upgrading the woods to Ping Ti/ carbon fiber Si3 then Ping G2 putter and the leftover Ping G2 irons.
I really need to upgrade to the new models but maybe after I finish my Pilot upgrades first. :) |

2 - PW: Wilson Gear Effect 1200. Had these for 18 years now and would not want to trade them for anything!!!
Driver: Bazooka (da Bomb)
Putter: Ping answer |

I couldnt agree more about the value of taking golf lessons to help maintain the proper techniques & eliminate any bad habits I tend to aqcuire over the season (about 4 months compared to year round golfing for TheWorm). I'm actually taking lessons again this year, not at a fancy resort mind you but the head pro at this course I go to is pretty good, his rates are reasonable too. I signed up for 4 one hr lesson package which I can take at any time during the season, I've had one hour lesson so far & it has already benefitted my game.
I'ts 6 AM, beautiful day.......gonna head ou to play some golf.:) |

I had the Cleveland irons custom fitted - they put a 3 degree lie on them. Cleveland does this at no charge! I really believe it makes a difference in the way I contact the ball. |

Thanks RipRock, I had a pretty good day except when I had to switch to 3W on the back 9 'cuz my driver just wasnt doing it for me.:(
Hey, maybe we can hook up for a round of golf someday...better yet, perhaps we can do a Piloteer foursome with Mikey Likes It & regrus......hmmmmmm, whaddya think? |

Hogan Edge forged blades; 2 iron through E wedge; Apex 4 shafts; D4 swingweight. My sand wedge is the same, but with D9 swingweight. Golf Pride Tour Wraps. I've been playing with these for over 10 years. They're not the easiest to hit, but I've grown accustomed to them through the years.
Woods are Callaway Big Bertha Warbird driver with 11 degrees loft and Callaway RCH 96 shaft in firm flex. The loft is a little too high as 9 degrees would be better with my swing, but I bought this from a friend on the cheap. Golf Pride Tour Wrap grip. 3 wood is a Taylor Made System 2 with 14 degrees loft, TT Dynamic Gold S300 steel shaft and D1 swing weight. My 5 wood is the same but with 21 degrees loft. All with Golf Pride Tour Wrap grips (what else.)
My putter is a Ping Zing 2 putter with the original grip.
I play with Titleist Professional and Maxfli Revolution (I stocked up on both when a golf warehouse was having a closeout sale.)
My grand would go towards a new set of Hogan Apex irons and a new set of Taylor Made R500 series woods. |

It sounds like we have similar taste in ammo. Our local Don Sherwood's (owned by Golfsmith, now) has the M3's on clearance @ $20/doz...maybe golfsmith.com has them, too.
They're a lot like the Pro's feel-wise....they sort of have that "snap" feel when hitting them rather than the softer feel of the Revs, but they're plenty soft for the short game, spin well and stop fast w/o too much spinning back. I like the putting feel better than the Revs since they're a bit more crisp. They're about 10 yds longer off the tee than the Revs, too.
I haven't played the Pro's in a long time since they were discontinued a few years ago, but that was one of my alltime favorite balls. |

Golf related but not about clubs
I saw Don TRAHAN aka swing surgeon on Golf Academy Live on Golf channel the other night. He is advocating the 3/4 turn swing, basically limiting the motion to lessen the stress to your body while hitting the ball straighter & just as far with proper training.
Don demo'd his technique & even taught a lucky audience the swing, basically the swing is shortened so as not to twist the torso so much. He does not advocate cupping the wrist but to rotate the wrist so that the back of your left hand is facing same direction as your body on the back swing, the arms are approx 90* to the body & the club is perpendicular to the ground. After impact, he brings up his club instead of allowing it to swing around & behind, this allows him to finish in a stance with his shoulders square to the target.
Don compares his swing to a rock on a string, the faster you want the rock to spin the less movement you make with your hand. He said the rock is the club, string is the arm & the hand is the body. He said moving the body less will make the club travel faster.
Has anyone tried this with any success? |

I love the Revs, even though they're not as long off the tee. The ball feels like butter coming off the club face. I like how they feel while putting, too. Feels just like a balata ball.
I've been trying a few other brands to find something comparable. I bought a dozen of the M3s, but I haven't hit them yet. I saw recently that Maxfli is re-introducing the Revolutions! I need to check them out when I can find a sleeve. I've tried a sleeve of the Callaway HX Blues and they feel real nice, but they scuff very easily. Lately, I've been playing my "non-competitive" rounds with Precept MC Ladys. They fly sky-high with low spin with a soft feel off the clubface. But, you have to play a bump-and-run game with them because you absolutely cannot spin them. |

Ooops, sorry for the late reply, borg! For some reason, this thread appeared just now as having new posts after I replied last.
I've yet to hit the range, let alone the course so far this year, but if we can arrange something, sure sounds like a good plan to me. |

regrus & Mikey Likes it havent been active in the forums lately but I'll PM or email them & I'll let you know. Yeah, it would be fun if we can get together for a round of golf. It'd be like a mini Pilot meet n greet. :D |

Maxfli M3 and M3LT (low traj) have been marked down again @ Don Sherwood's to $15/doz. A steal @ that price for those in the SF Bay Area. golfsmith.com still shows $20/doz.
I guarantee you'll like these balls. In fact, if you don't, I will take them off your hands for FREE. ;)
I bought another 6 doz. That's ~6 more rounds worth! :D |

Local Golf Town has the M3's on sale @ half price for Father's day weekend, $24.99 CAD/ dozen. I will have to make a trip & pick up a couple.

| Anybody have any opinions about the Mizuno Fli Hi II hybrids? I'm a high handicapper who hits the 3, 4, and 5 all about the same distance, and I can't hit a fairway wood to save my life. I hit a Mizuno Fli Hi II a couple of times last week, but not enough to get a good feel. My usual hook turned into a gentle draw with the club, and I'm seriously considering a 21 degree to replace my 3 iron. Any comments? |

shutrbug, you should go check out these sites. They have plenty of golfclub users who have written reviews of just about every club there is. Hope you'll find them useful:

Thanks for the link. I knew about golfreview.com, but hadn't seen the other site. Unfortunately they didn't have any reviews of the Fli Hi's. I ended up buying a 21 degree Fli Hi 2 on eBay for a good price... I hope it works out well for me. My game certainly needs it! |

The Maxfli M3 golf balls are now on sale at Edwin Watts for ~$19/Doz.
The total shipping there is $7.95 for orders below $150. Shipping is 2 day overnight. Their telephone number is 1-800-874-0146.
This might be the last time you'll see Maxfli M3's.
I just ordered 5 doz.

Saw the M3 red (standard trajectory) for $16/doz @ Don Sherwood the other day. No black (low traj). Saw the M3 black (low traj) @ Copelands Sports -- $12.99/doz!
Some updates to my bag:
Pulled the Adams utility club out of the bag altogether. I hit the 3i better.
Replaced the old Yonex 3w with a CobraSZ 3w stiffy (matches the driver; great club!).
Replaced the Oddy Rossie Blade putter w/the new-ish Ping G2 Craz-E. I am deadly from within 10 or 15 feet. Now if I could find the friggin fairway with the other clubs in the bag, I'd be in great shape! |

response to theworm:
Wow! That sounds like a great deal for the M3's.
I went to Sherwood website - they had M3 tour "practice" balls for $16.99 minus an additional 10% if you order 3 or more doz. I'm not sure what "practice" balls are. I know that they are stamped "practice" on each ball.
Oh well. I have enough for now. It's a shame that the weather here in Massachusetts is pretty cold now - and golf is probably out until next year. |

I carry the following in my bag:
Mizuno MP001 Driver, stiff flex, 9 degrees
Mizuno TZoid 3 wood, stiff flex, 13 degrees
Mizuno Pro Forged II 2 iron, sensicore S300
Mizuno MP-30 3-6 iron, S300 shafts
Mizuno MP-37 7-PW, S300 shafts
Callaway 52 and 56 degree wedges, stock shafts
Scotty Cameron "Sante Fe" putter.
I play alot of golf and carry a 3 handicap. Here in Oklahoma, golf is almost a year round sport. A few cold mornings but, for the most part, year round. |
