I listen to a lot of different kinds but since I play guitar I tend to listen to a lot of 80's rock and metal. Or the classical guitar solos.

I grew up near the bay area during the 80's so so my all time band is Tesla, Joe Satriani, Bon Jovi(lived in Jersey a couple of years) The benefits of being in the Marine Corps for So many years is you travel a lot and experience a bunch of different things.

I am a semi-retired club rat so my tastes lean towards trance and techno music.

I listen to a wide variety of music (even had Beethoven and Guns & Roses in the car at the same time:eek: ), but classic rock is my clear favorite.

Om XM Radio, my default is 70s on 7, but I work in some 60s on 6, Bluegrass, Country, and R&B. If I'm running around on Sunday and the race has started, I'm listening to the rhythm of 800 horses on the NASCAR channel. :p

My "test album" for a new audio setup (well, it used to be an album) is Loggins and Messina's MotherLode. The mandolin (at least I think it's mandolin) work on that collection is great.

I enjoy a wide variety of music...about the only thing I haven't managed to develop a taste for is jazz.

Lately I've gotten into Celtic/American Traditional music (w/hammered dulcimer, Irish harp, fiddle, etc.) Local musicians such as Maggie Sansone and Sue Richards have helped increase the popularity of this kind of music, and I try to catch their concerts whenever I can.

A dear friend of mine was a classical musician. Knowing him, and having sung in choral groups most of my life, have helped me appreciate classical music.

But I've always liked pop music, too. Some of my all-time favorite songs/performers over the years include:

Peter Gabriel - Sledgehammer
Kool & the Gang - Celebration
Simple Minds - Don't You Forget About Me
Seal - Kiss from a Rose
R.E.M. - Losing My Religion
Yes - Roundabout
INXS - Need You Tonite
Stones - Sympathy for the Devil
Enya - Orinoco Flow (Sail Away)
Styx - Sail Away
Beatles - Anything!
Crosby, Stills, Nash (& Young) - Anything!

I could go on and on...... :2:

I seriously like everything, from Peter Gabriel, Elliot Smith,Tori Amos, Oingo Boingo, They might be giants, to Santana and George Michael. Heck, there's even some Christian 3rd Day and Jars of Clay mixed in there. Sometimes a little Garth is okay. Then there's RipRock, who got me hooked on IZ's somewhere over the rainbow tune, thank you for that Rippy!
Does anyone have any good Piano music to recommend? I love strings too. Those two can move me to tears for no apparent reason, but don't know what's good to buy.
So I like almost everything EXCEPT death metal and twanging country.

HM2...

Cool, I'm glad someone recognized them. Tourniquet has rapidly become one of my favorite bands since I discovered Crawl to China at a Christian bookstore. For those that don't know what we are talking about, Tourniquet is a hard metal band... I mostly like the newer stuff since CtC, but I have every CD and enjoy all of them. I even have their video biopsy on VHS. The 80s speed/pop metal sound in some of the early stuff is a little outside my "groove", but I like it all... Wondering what's up with a guitarist replacement, I'll have to check www.tourniquet.net to find out.

Cheers,
-Davedela

What classical guitar is that between the Ovations? I have a rather old Yamaha G-250s that I bought in a pawn shop in Canada for next to nothing that has truly great sound. For some of my collection see this thread: The Official Merrywang Thread

It's a YAMAHA CG180SA, one of their best classicals. I paid around $600 for it.

Currently listening to John Mayer's Room for Squares & Heavier Things. I'm also trying to figure the guitar chords for some of the songs, since I'm "self taught" the process is long & tedious.:(

Almost all of what I play anymore is goofy kids songs that I make up. 3 chords are way more than enough for these songs. Or everyone gets an instrument of some kind and we have a parade around the house. Think of the guitar as a drum--that's the key for me. Technically, the guitar is a percussion instrument.:jump3:

Wow, someone that's heard of Boingo. Not real big here in the south west.

Favorites: Kind of on a Allison Krauss kick right now but can listen to anything. Pink Floyd to Garth Brooks( he used to play in a club about 10 miles up the road before people started liking his music). Big Band, Rock old and new, Country, no disco please.

Hell ya, Boingo rocks. I have a couple of their albums, yes albums-vinyl, those black round things from a bygone era. Still have an 8 track too.

I've discovered Johnny Cash's music since watching the movie WALK THE LINE with PHOENIX as CASH. Since I liked the movie a lot I thought I'd pick up the soundtrack, but when I was at the store I ended up buying the genuine material instead......I bought "The Legend Johnny Cash" CD.......love all the songs.......the almost simplistic lyrics and musical arrangements are refreshing from the heavily synthesized/computer enhanced sounds of todays artists.

Also listening to Jack JOHNSON's "In Between Dreams" and "Curious George" soundtrack CD's, I discovered his sound while skating at the outdoor rink at Fairmonts Jasper Park Lodge, the staff at the outdoor kiosk played one of his CD's, the sound intrigued me so I asked who the artist was. When we got back into town I went ahead and bought the CD's.....still searching for the CD that I heard in Jasper, the CD feature Jack and his guitar......again a much simpler sound which I tend to gravitate to nowadays.

Johnny does a great verson of NIne Inch Nails Hurt, and Personal Jesus, Depeche Mode.

my background is A/V recording and post production. I am in tech now, but when I got out of school I worked for a major label for several years.

One of my first gigs was to be the cameraman on a tour bus for a band that was releasing a new album and wanted to promote it across america starting in Clevland OH. Turned out to be a 3 month road trip with Jon Bon... man what an introduction to the music industry that was! We were head bangers by day and at night I would fire up Andreas Vollenweider to chill everyone out :)

Today I listen to a very large inventory of music from Rush to todays country and everything from Coletrain to Handle... love the music world!

I also am a big fan if Jack Johnson. I discovered his music a while back when I was in Hawaii. He was virtually unheard of in the Midwest, so it was very hard to find his CDs in stores here a couple of years ago. He has since had a few hits on the radio, so the larger stores like Best Buy carry all his CDs now, but not many people in my neck of the woods like that style of music. Too bad, their loss.
